Web

Are you interested in media, online publishing or web development and design?

The Badger Herald, the nation's largest independent student newspaper, is seeking students interested in working for the Herald's web department.

Learn how a media company operates while contributing to a website thousands see every day, and gain valuable experience that pertains to many career tracks.

Best of all, become a part of the most vibrant student group on the planet!

Design

Page Designer

The design department is looking to hire students trained in advanced graphic design to layout pages. A qualified applicant would be a UW-Madison enrolled student with extensive knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop. This paid position typically requires two to three nights a week. Previous experience with a printed publication is not necessary. Copy

Copy Editor

The Badger Herald is seeking several copy editors for the spring semester. Copy editors need to be detail detail-oriented, aware of current campus, city and state events, have a strong command of English language and grammar and have a commitment to clear, accurate and consistent style. Duties include editing stories for accuracy, clarity, grammatical correctness and adherence to Associated Press Style and Herald Style, as well as performing some light fact checking. Applicants should have some editorial experience, be familiar with AP Style and be willing to work late nights.

Editorial

Video journalism

We are seeking students interested in on-camera reporting and video production for badgerherald.com. If interested, please send your contact information to , and tell us your year, major, and about any previous experience.

Comic artists

Do you find yourself constantly sketching on napkins, coming up with sinister plots and doodling till you can doodle no more? The Badger Herald is looking for the next great comics artist, and it could be you!

Photographers

The Badger Herald is looking for photographers to capture campus and state events.

Applicants should have a well-rounded knowledge of photography principles and a notable amount of experience with digital or film SLRs. If you're interested, e-mail for more information!

News reporters

The Badger Herald news department is always looking for dedicated writers to work once or twice per week putting together stories for our award-winning section. Writers may work under one of four sections — campus, city, state or college.

  • Campus stories highlight events on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus and examine issues surrounding the university and the administration.
  • Our city beat covers Madison area crime, government and events, including Halloween and the Mifflin Street Block Party.
  • The college beat uncovers issues with the UW Board of Regents and student government on campus.
  • Finally, the state beat follows stories occurring under the State Capitol and how issues relate to students on campus.

Sports reporters and writers

Interested in writing for the sports department of the Badger Herald? The sports section is always looking for writers to cover all Badger athletics on campus, whether it's preview stories for upcoming games or meets, feature stories on individual athletes, or game recap stories for numerous sports.

Previous newspaper experience is not necessary. Anyone interested in joining the Herald Sports staff should e-mail Jonah Braun at for more information.

Opinion writers

The opinion section is always looking for passionate writers with well-reasoned and unique dissections of campus, city and state issues on a biweekly basis. While national subjects are occasionally accepted, local topics are preferred. Students from all academic backgrounds are welcome, regardless of major or career path. We are also interested in occasional letters from any students or other locals passionate enough to voice any angst, love, or utter indifference to university, city and state affairs.

ArtsEtc. writers

ArtsEtc. is looking for inspired, critical writers to help make the section the best arts and entertainment source for Madison's engaged readership. Our creative and motivated writers will preview and review both national and area artists' releases, including food, albums, games, movies, plays, exhibits and more, as well as write thoughtful commentary on a wide range of topics.
