Picking a playlist is tough stuff. I’ve been listening to a lot of ragtime, which has resulted in losing touch with a lot of pop music. No one wants to hear about the “Carolina Shout,” though. So, here is a list of nine songs that sound good (in no particular order).

Nujabes | “Feather” | Nujabes

Japanese producer Seba Jun has some soothing, chill beats, and this album will set a welcoming atmosphere for a wide range of tastes.

Cat Power | “Metal Heart” | Jukebox

I don’t usually endorse cover albums, but Cat Power doesn’t butcher any of the great songs on Jukebox. Her rendition of Sinatra’s “New York,” starts the album off smooth and sassy, too. like a rich barbecue sauce.

Radiohead | “Four Minute Warning” | In Rainbows (B side)

This song was an awesome way to end In Rainbows.

Elliott Smith | “Let’s Get Lost” | From a Basement on the Hill

Smith makes an excellent anthem for a self-destructive person. It’s a sad, frustrating, and beautiful song.

MSTRKRFT | “Heartbreaker Featuring John Legend “| Fist of God

This ultra catchy song is a bit unusual for MSTRKRFT’s repertoire, and I think Legend’s vocals really balance out a heavy synth sound.

Chromeo | “Bonafied Lovin’ (Tough Guys)” | Fancy Footwork

Simply listening to this duo from Montreal makes me feel like a badass, and this song in particular has a perfect blend of 80’s sound and cool-guy lyrics.

Neil Young | “Old Man” | Live at Massey Hall

The original studio recording doesn’t have the anecdote Young gives in Live at Massey Hall, which really transforms the song from a poignant moment to an experience.

Neu! | “Hallogallo” | Neu!

Au Revoir Simone | “Only You Can Make You Happy” | Still Night, Still Light

These three Brooklyn girls know how to make cohesive, complex songs from only a few keyboards and synthesizers. This song has a great transition in the middle that totally changes direction, and really exemplifies the range of their sound.
