"We're fired up; we can't take it no more!" rang through the streets of downtown Madison as nearly 200 University of Wisconsin students rallied Wednesday in support of six young black men accused of attempted murder in Jena, La. The incarceration of the six black high school students, known as the "Jena Six," sparked national attention when they were charged with attempted murder for a schoolyard fight with a white peer. Students from the Wisconsin Black Student Union and other multicultural student organizations joined together in an effort to raise awareness about the nationwide debate surrounding the small Louisiana town, residents of which have accused the state's justice system of being racially discriminatory. Marching from the center of Library Mall, down State Street and through the State Capitol, the students impeded traffic to end at the final destination of the City County Building while chanting, "Free the Jena Six." At the top of the City County Building steps, the crowd began to softly sing "We Shall Overcome," a historical hymn that earned its fame through the Civil Rights Movement of the late 1950s and early 1960s. UW senior Ingrid Smith, co-chair of the WBSU political committee, reminded students what the rally stood for and how significant it will be for future generations. "We're not just marching for Jena Six; this was just a broad issue that we all can rally behind," Smith said. "There's a Wisconsin Six, a Michigan Six, an Illinois Six, a Minnesota Six. … There's a six, eight, 10, 12, 20 all around the world, and we need to keep that relevant in our discussions, as well as the injustices that we are facing on this campus." Among the student organizations present, members of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority showed their support in the protest, which comes in light of a recent incident in which members of Lambda Theta Phi have accused the UW Police Department of racial profiling. "I hope this rally will open up people's eyes, especially on the campus community, to show that there are minorities here and we deserve a right to be here, to put on our [organization's] events as we always do and to not be deterred from doing so," said UW senior Amanda Cantu, a member of Lambda Theta Alpha. UW sophomore David Ellington Wright, WBSU president, said he hoped the rally woke people up and aroused awareness. "We went through the Capitol — I hope they heard us, went to the City Hall — hope they heard us, went to the courthouse — hope they heard us," Wright said. "We hope that this rally will start a dialogue." WBSU plans to organize a meeting on Oct. 10 to discuss issues of racism on campus with special guests including Chancellor John Wiley, as well as faculty and students.

Not only is there almost no coverage in the corporate media of black violent crimes against white people, but in high profile cases, they proffer black criminals as ‘real victims’.
To illustrate the bias in the corporate media, imagine if the facts were reversed - if a gang of six white kids led by someone with four previous convictions for violent-crime had attacked a lone black student, kicking and stomping him into unconsciousness. As far as the corporate media are concerned, they would be interviewing the black victim on every TV talk show across the land, discussing his fear, his pain, his suffering. They would be interviewing his crying relatives and friends. They would not be voicing any fear that the white attackers would be treated too harshly, or that they would be treated at all. The attackers would not be celebrated.

I agree with 3:33am! I never see series of high-profile Madison Police Department press releases listing a “black man in his 20’s” as a suspect, nor do I ever see any missing WHITE women ever get the media attention they deserve, and people around here never irrationally fear for their safety around black people at night! Boy it’s tough being white in America! - Germain Q. Stemme

During the LA riots, observers noted that the beating of that white truck driver was shown on average 11 times more often than the beating of Rodney King. Just food for thought…

Just one correction: They went to the former Dane County Courthouse. Not the new one.

I am disgusted by the behavior of sharpton. If he wanted to help the black community in this country he would direct his efforts toward education, the elimination of affirmative action (because it encourages racial separation) and crime prevention. And when will we finally hear “THE CAUCASION COMMUNITY CRIES OUT FOR JUSTICE!!!!!!!!” THIS IS A HATE CRIME!

Right. The corporate media, owned by rich white men, can’t get over their love affair with Black people. No, really. It’s very plausible.
IP hash: 9a213619
The case is not really about what color did what… it’s about the charges that the young men received. If the tables were turned, the white student probably wouldn’t receive half the amount of criminal punishment as the black students. The white male didn’t even get a school suspension!!
When I was in highschool, no matter what happened to whom, EVERYBODY involved in a school figt was suspended — regardless of who got they booty beat.

I thought the downtown march was stupid! The case is being tried in Jena Louisiana, not Madison, Wisconsin. Why march here? All they did was snarl up traffic in one of the busiest areas in town. They really ticked a lot of people off.
Thanks to the marchers, I don’t care what happens to the Jena 6. If blacks can’t get their point across without making obnoxious idiots of themselves then they’re not worth supporting.

Its funny how all you mention the media, not so long ago my friend and i commented on such issue; nothing to do with Jena Six. I am nor black or white, i am a latina just thought that might make a difference. We discussed that in Illinois when a woman was sexually harrassed/abused infront of her little boy the article was a small section in the news paper for one or two days at the most. And prior to such incident a white woman was abused and it was ALL over the media in the front page and it took up more than a column and more than one days worth of news… Now how is that giving minorities more media attention.

i am 15 years old and i am from longisland i totally agree with the fact that longisland has a long way to go if they don’t take action and fix this racism stuff we’ll began to have racism riots like in the 60’s… this is something serios read between the lines its not about blacks and whites its about racism its about us setting examples we have children with sisters and brothers different colors who may turn against eachother because of what bsociety is teaching them. someone needs to take action.. god bless america… NO GOD BLESS tHIS WORLD!! longisland hurts too!!

People like those who organized/ attended this rally are making a huge difference in the fight for justice for these high school teens and other people of color around the country who are consistently racially profiled and victims of our criminal “injustice” system. This is issue wasn’t getting any media attention until grassroots efforts in places all over, like Madison, forced the media to cover it. Education not incarceration!

I agree, sharpton and rev. jackson should be going after the gangsta rappers. These are some of the most recognizable and richests blacks and all they do is perpetuate the stereotype of a black thug using the n word and then shootin’ a white boy for using the same word. Take some iniative and try to actually change how you are precieved, speak out against the badseed blacks. Quit crying racism at every bump in the road. Also, I wasn’t a slave owner and I’ve never met someone who was actually a slave so I don’t owe you shit. If you can’t start helping yourselves, then why should the rest of us bend over backwards for you.

I am pissed that someone would be so ignorant to say why do the march in madison and it didn’t happen in Madison. The point is not that it happened in Louisiana, but that is happens here in Madison, and everyone tries to overlook it. There has been an injustice and we are protesting not only for the Jena 6, but for ourselves.
IP hash: 8d46dd1e
People march here to show support…just as marches were held all across the nation.
I am sick of people being ignorant and ignoring the fact that racism is alive everywhere, even in the so-called “liberal” Madison—yes, Madison might seem extremely liberal if you are White.
As a Latina student at UW, I cannot express how many times I’ve felt the sting of racism. No, often, it is not as “in your face” as it was in the instance of the Jena 6 (with the nooses hanging from the “white” tree). But I’ve exprerienced it, and so have many of my friends. I can’t tell you how many times my friend, a black male who works full time and is going to school, has been approached by ignorant white students on campus because they assume he is either a drug dealer or he knows someone who is. Don’t you think that is a little racist? Stereotyping a young black male with nice clothes and a nice car as a drug dealer?
People need to open up their minds and realize what is going on. The JENA 6 and their charges is NOT about justice. In the Untied States, Blacks are three times more likely to be imprisoned than Whites for the same crime. Blacks are also less likely to get probation than whites for the same crime. (FACTS TAKEN FROM www.nul.org)

to 9:33am - thank you for clarifying that Jena is in Louisiana, not Wisconsin. I have been so confused about that. And I’m so sorry that 2 minutes of your day were “wasted” thinking about the inequalities that still exist in America today. you’re right. as a white student on this campus, i absolutely should have stayed home and skimmed Cosmo instead of raising awareness about social and political injustice. how dare I speak my mind?? how dare I support “blacks” in their struggle for equality??
if you can’t get your point across without making an obnoxious idiot of yourself, then you’re not worth supporting.
P.S. I feel I should warn you that there will be more marches, more rallies, and more demonstrations in the future. So on those days, I would suggest you stay at home. I’d hate for you to sit in traffic for another 2 minutes again.

Every one of the Jena Six students walked away with very little punishment for what they had done. Because of this, they now think that they are above the law and can do as they please.

Welcome to the Civil Rights Movement of the 21st century. So the question of the century is what are we going to learn from the 1960s movement, and how are we going to be more sauvey about fighting for our causes? So we don’t repeat mistakes that were alreday made and digress instead of progress.
IP hash: b1e6e8d2
9:33 am, that is the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard. I know i’m repeating what many before me have said, but the point was to address racial injustice or just injustice in general.
you don’t care now? because of a march? please, if you don’t care now you NEVER did. this is about recognizing those boys’ rights are people. this just shows how little we as Americans care about our fellow citizens.
oh and “blacks” getting their point across? what about the LGBT rallies that walk down the street? the latino rallies, the Hmong rallies, i’ve seen it all. are they all not worth supporting? and it wasn’t just “blacks”, it was primarily black people, yes, but there were whites, latino/as, and asains.
i support the cause as someone who cares about justice in America, because i don’t want my friends or family to be next. Maybe you should consider that.

“During the LA riots, observers noted that the beating of that white truck driver was shown on average 11 times more often than the beating of Rodney King. Just food for thought…”
And STILL those white folks didn’t riot, burn their neighborhoods up and loot the local stores. AMAZING!
IP hash: f71202cd
Welcome to the 21st Century Civil Rights Movement. The question of the century is what did we learn from the 1960’s movement, and how can we be more savy this time around about fighting for the greater cause. So we don’t repeat the same mistakes that have already been mande. Progress not digress

wow. people sure are ignorant these days. to even think that a group of white students in the deep south would receive any sort of similar punishment as the Jena 6 students is ridiculous. since when is a kid getting jumped attempted murder? i’ve been jumped before and all that happened was a couple suspensions… plus i got in trouble too! the fact is that the white kid who got beat up deserved getting stomped. he provoked the group by using fighting words, which legally means he threw the ‘first punch’ in terms of starting the altercation. also, because we are a country under rule of law, we cannot decide that because one of the black students had prior convictions means his current crime gets bumped to something other than what it was. it was battery and the students should be charged as such and the white student should be held equally accountable for the fight. its only complicated by the “white tree” and other racial sentiments in the case. this is a case that should’ve been handled within the school. it’s a shame that places like Jena even exist in the 21st century. the fact is that this has become a federal issue because Jena can’t handle what goes on in Jena in a fair manner. we are one country, so our country needs to remedy these problems. Its interesting how we are so ready to democratize the world but find it easy to not care what happens within our own borders.
“Thanks to the marchers, I don’t care what happens to the Jena 6. If blacks can’t get their point across without making obnoxious idiots of themselves then they’re not worth supporting.” i’m sure you are standing firm waving the flag for our boys in Iraq though, just not for our own people. talk about segregation. how about you try being an american for ALL OF US and recognize Jena as an AMERICAN problem and not just a black one… seeing as how they’re americans too.
and media bias guy from the first post… i don’t even know how to save you. are you even serious? no media coverage for white victims?
i’ll just let the guy from the second post be the response i give to you too since you’re probably too numb to process both responses. the attackers in the Jena case are NOT being celebrated in case you weren’t watching. it’s about unfair treatment, which is clearly the case if you paid any attention to the details of the case at all.

“Imagine you were walking down a city street, and someone leapt from behind a tree and hit you so hard that you fell to the sidewalk unconscious.”
“Would you later describe that as a fight?”

“The victim in this crime, who has been all but forgotten amid the focus on the defendants, was a young man named Justin Barker, who was not involved in the nooses incident three months earlier. According to all the credible evidence I am aware of, after lunch, he walked to his next class. As he passed through the gymnasium door to the outside, he was blindsided and knocked unconscious by a vicious blow to the head thrown by Mychal Bell. While lying on the ground unaware of what was happening to him, he was brutally kicked by at least six people.”

Lets keep in mind that their are two sides to every story. It is interesting to hear what the prosecutor has to say on the topic.

“Conjure the image of schoolboys fighting: they exchange words, clench fists, throw punches, wrestle in the dirt until classmates or teachers pull them apart. Of course that would not be aggravated second-degree battery, which is what the attackers are now charged with. (Five of the defendants were originally charged with attempted second-degree murder.) But that's not what happened at Jena High School.

Wow! Some of the early message on this board scream racism to me. The reason why we protested the deriliction of justice happening in Jenna Louisiana is because we stand in solidarity with those 6 students who didn’t get a fair shake at justice because of their skin color.
Furthermore, the situation in Jenna 6 and some of the messages on this board ridiculing the protest prove the point that racism still exists in our society today.
As for the person that wrote when will i hear:”THE CAUCASION COMMUNITY CRIES OUT FOR JUSTICE!!!!!!!!” THIS IS A HATE CRIME! You will hear this when the justice system discriminates against white people. However, that won’t happen because the majority of people in power and judicial positions have one thing in common… i am sure you have guessed it…Their white and their men.
Finally, as far as the media is concerned. Who gives a shit! Do you really watch CNN and Fox news and believe the half truths that come out of the anchors mouths. Look on the street and at alternative media sources and you will get real information that proves, inequality, racism, and sexism still exists.

People seem to be comparing how much incidents are noted in the media for whites and blacks. Certainly race places a factor, but socio-economic status plays a large part as well. I know many of you don’t want to admit this, but it’s not always about race until you make it so.
IP hash: 77e00514
Right. This had nothing to do with race until people started saying it was. Nooses are a completely racially neutral symbol.
IP hash: 94925203
All the racists comments on this board makes me sick to my stomach and all of you guys are weak as hell if you can’t even put your name out there. Since my face is in the picture and I was there let me clear some things up 1. The Jena Six were unfairly punish for their crimes (these are children who have been in jail for 10 months) 2. The white guy who got his ass whoop was called the black kids niggers and poking fun of a black kid that got beaten up earlier that month. (And he went out to a party later that night) 3. They tried to charge the black kids with attempted murder….(With Nike shoes comeon) Had this been in the reverse and it had you know those white guys who have recieve an easier sentence. 4. Racism is everywhere even on this so call liberal campus…as a black student I have seen it 5. Not every black agrees with Sharpton or Jesse just like not every white agrees with Daivd Duke! 6. No one is saying that they should be punish for their actions, but so should the whites who hung the nooses and beat up the black kid (Let the punish fit the crime!) 7. Not all blacks listen to rap music (And yes there are black anti rap groups out there and postive rap music….AL sharpton had address this fact and white people buy rap CD’s in droves) 8. Even though not in Madison…the Jena 6 need to be protected and the word needs to get out. If you don’t like it tough!
No you know…get your facts straight before you post it makes you sound really dumb…and we don’t have time for that!
IP hash: 13788092
“Not every black agrees with Sharpton or Jesse just like not every white agrees with Daivd Duke!”
Care to guess on the respective percentages?
I’d say blacks are FAR more prejudiced than whites. It’s much easier to be black in a “white” area than be white in a “black” area. In one case it’s a hate crime if anyone says a harsh word, while in the other case you’d be lucky to get out alive.

what is goin on the world today? go back to africa? go back to mexico? I’ve never been to africa in my life, how am i gonna go back to a place i’ve neva been? racism is wrong no matter what the persons skin color is. but evil cannot justify evil. basicly two wrongs don’t make a right? People need to stop defending racism and start attacking it!! it’s not okay!! it’s not okay for blacks to be racist regardless of what happened to our people and it’s not okay for whites to be racist regardless of what ever stereotypes they have heard or experiences they’ve had with black people. The first step toward races living in harmony is people realising that it’s not okay to think this way! People have it confused thinking this is a war between the races and we better take sides and i betta stick wit my color. NO!! it’s not a war between races it’s a war between the human race and racism!!
I’ma end my post with wake up america! or racism will be the end of us all!!
IP hash: 94925203
To the person that said that nooses are not racially motivated…are you dumb! There is a history behind that in the Black community read a book! That is like telling a Jew that holocaust never happen! Ingorance people, racist people, are all going to get theirs in the end b/c some where there is a God that sees this and is taking notes. Racism be it African America, white, Asian, Arab, LGBT, Hispanic, whatever…is wrong…ppl need to stop seeing the outside and learn to see the inside get to know a person..if you don’t support the Jena Six then who cares! You are not as important as you might like to think! Go and get a clue!
IP hash: 4779517e
Ignorance. Pure ignorance.
People need to learn what is TRULY at hand: unequal justice. Let’s put aside all issues of race for now on, and let’s just focus on a colorless person sitting in an adult jail as a juvenile for 10 months, serving a sentence that shouldn’t have been as strict (when other instances such as this warranted judges to put the attackers on probation with anger management classes), prosecuted by a D.A. who wanted to put these young men behind bars and even told them all he could sign their life away with a flick of the pen!
Surely, one can argue that the justice system has failed these young men. They were treated as criminals before they even stepped foot in to the court room, throwing out the notion that people are innocent until proven guilty without the slightest doubt from a jury of their peers. One can also argue that federal prison time for juveniles is more than a just punishment, more so being unusual. And did we not forget about the cruel and unusual punishment clause? It’s not cruel AND unusual, it’s cruel and/or unusual; they are independent from each other. Sending a 16 year old young man to serve time with excessively violent criminals is extremely unusual to me.
Even though there is the strong R-word being thrown around, and there are a number of people that believe and disbelieve in that R-word, let’s put skin color, class, creeds aside. A young man was assaulted, and these young men should have been punished. But the punishment it seems is too excessive. Probation with anger management would have been a suitable punishment, even 6 months spent in a juvenile correctional facility. But not a year in a federal penitentiary.
It’s time to unite ALL masses, break down all the barriers of separation that we have built up over the years, and support each other for the true cause at hand: fair justice. The Jena 6 is not a racial case, but a trial about the injustices of Lady Liberty.
IP hash: 4779517e
To add to what my peers have stated the Jena 6 individuals have been wrongly punished. I know of someone who is serving two years for assault kidnapping with a deadly weapon, rape, and he got two years behind bars and four years probation. And yet that young man is behind bars for a crime I’m sure he was over punished for so you tell what’s worse.
The frustrating argument about race is the ignorance that plagues us daily. There are people who walk around here who have to tip-toe through life because whether educated or uneducated a slip of the tongue can cause more rallies and racially motived crimes, as well as more and more bitter stereotypes. So you tell me what difference does it make that the ones that are being charged are “black” and the one that was beaten is “white”…….
Come to think of it even though the symbolism of the march made it’s way to Madison no one but those seven individuals really truly know what happened so to punish all of one race or the other doesn’t make any since to me either.
IP hash: d44831c9
I was sitting in my room reading all the racist, socially incorrect comments that people have written (with leaving there names of course)when I decided to add my own two cents.
Last time I checked, the rights of unjustly accused children are more important than the two minutes that were” wasted” during the JENA 6 march. But since people are so upset, let me, as a student who attended the march apologize. I am so sorry that a few of us students decided that fighting against racially injustice and injustice was a little more important than the 2 precious minutes that the racist, yeah I said it, madison residens had to ENDURE at a RED light. Next time, well be sure to just walk around in a circle so as not to disturb the oh so important lives of Madison’s inhabitants.
And to all you students who are clearly wasting the tuition money your parents are paying, you need to retake history. Because last time I checked, black people didn’t just jump on slave ship to “go along for the ride.” So stop telling us to go back!
The march for the JENA six wasn;t just to protest against the injustices down south, it was held to bring light to the stupid that still spews out of ignorant peoples mouth.
And who ever said it was easier to be black than white in America know they lied! It won’t ever be easy to be black because there will always be an anonymous group of idiots who complain that 2 minutes of their day was wasted fighting for injustice.
-Bettina (this is what your supposed to do when you post. If you wanna be anonymous, go to AA.)
IP hash: 94925203
Sad so sad that we are still fighting over this…..people need to really understand what is going on. To the person that said that it isn’t about race….are you kidding me? Get a clue. To the person that said blacks are more racists to whites…get a clue…racism no matter where it comes is wrong! Stop letting the media brainwash you..think for yourselves…read a book…meet people..and ask God, Allah, Budha or whoever you worship to forgive you for being so dumb, ingorance, mean, and foolish……
