Friends of slain University of Wisconsin junior Brittany Zimmermann raised more than $2,000 to support a scholarship in her memory at the Mifflin Street Block Party Saturday.
Zimmermann’s friends and family set up a stand at 9 a.m. and sold slices of pizza, donuts and bottled water to raise money for the Brittany Zimmermann Memorial Fund, which was created by her parents to support students who pay their way through school, like Zimmermann.
“I just think that this experience will make something positive of such atragicsituation,” said Falyn Glamm, a friend of the family.
Zimmermann’s friend Amanda Hill said the scholarship is to help somebody “who has a lot of drive as far as schoolwork goes.”
At the stand, they were accepting donations for the scholarship and also for Zimmermann’s family, so they can pay off the debt they inherited from her school loans.
According to Ald. Mike Verveer, whose District 4 includes both Mifflin Street and West Doty Street, where Zimmermann died, many partygoers gave money without taking food.
“It was really heartwarming to see the countless people give money and not want anything in return,” Verveer said.
According to Verveer, the idea to set up the sales during the block party came from Jenna Krasselt, sister of Zimmermann’s fianc Jordan Gonnering.
“[The stand had] the dual effect of raising money for a really great cause but also keeping Brittany’s memory alive,” Verveer said. “People who walked by the stand saw her bright smiling face on the posters that Jenna’s parents held up all day.”
Hill added they had a good amount of traffic all day and had more people come as the day’s festivities continued.
“We’ve had a lot of peoplecomeup. We don’t really need to announce it anymore,” Hill said.
Police and Mifflin residents met earlier last week and stressed safety in the wake of Zimmermann’s murder, which occurred in her home only a few blocks from Mifflin Street on April 2.
Verveer said police urged students to be more alert, not let strangers into their homes, lock up their belongings and report people “who didn’t look like the typical Mifflin partygoer.”
In the light of the tragedy, Verveer said he thought the tragedy had “kind of a calming effect for the partygoers.”

Uh, yeah. Why wouldn’t you have to pay back money you borrowed?
No offense to the family, but I hope they have talked to their lawyer about suing the city or Dane County for the whole 911 fiasco. There isn’t a jury that wouldn’t award the family a huge settlement, deserved or not. Of course they might want to wait it out a bit longer as all the rest of the MPD incompetence comes to light.
If any journalist wants to make a name for himself (or write a book), they ought to start digging into MPD, find a cop that doesn’t like Wray (plenty of them) and get them to leak info about all the mistakes that have been made in these unsolved murders, while they devote all their resources to the Mifflin St Block Party.
