Senior class president pleads guilty for theft

The University of Wisconsin-Madison’s senior class president pled guilty Friday to misdemeanor theft of less than $2,500 at the Dane County Courthouse.

Oliver Delgado, who was elected to his office in April, admitted to stealing six Van Galder bus tickets from Memorial Union last March.

Judge Stuart Schwartz will withhold guilt while Delgado is in the first offender’s program. If he completes it, the case will be dismissed.

If he fails to do so, there will be no trial; Schwartz will accept Delgado’s guilty plea, and it will go to sentencing where he will face a maximum fine of $10,000 or nine months in jail.

Following the hearing, Delgado told The Badger Herald he wanted to move past the incident and implied others should be concentrating on more important matters.

“We’re two months away from electing a new president, and I think that should be the main issue right now,” Delgado said.

Four of the six stolen tickets were returned. There will be some sort of restitution for the two tickets that were used and not returned, according to prosecutor Timothy Kiefer.

“Some of the tickets were returned, and it’s not clear exactly what the dollar value of the loss is,” Kiefer said. “But there’s no dispute as to restitution of this; it’s just going to be figured out over at first offender’s.”

Two roundtrip tickets from Madison to O’Hare for UW students cost $74.

Van Galder tracked the missing tickets to Delgado when he tried to use one in Chicago after returning from Puerto Rico. He was asked for identification, and UW police went to Delgado’s house March 27 where he admitted to the crime.

Student Council representative and senior class president runner-up Jeff Wright said there is nothing the Associated Students of Madison can do to censure or punish Delgado.

“There’s not much action we can take,” Wright said. “It’s out of our hands to do anything to the officers in terms of disciplinary actions.”

Secretary of the Faculty David Musolf, one of the officials responsible for managing class officers, said any discipline of Delgado is out of his hands and would be left to the Offices of the Dean of Students.

Associate Dean of Students Kevin Helmkamp declined an interview with The Badger Herald last week. UW spokesperson John Lucas said any disciplinary action on the Delgado case taken through ODOS is not public information.

At the time of the theft two tickets cost $74. They currently cost $80 for two tickets.

“Associate Dean of Students Kevin Helmkamp declined an interview with The Badger Herald last week. UW spokesperson John Lucas said any disciplinary action on the Delgado case taken through ODOS is not public information.”

Lucas is dead wrong. An open records request would require the UW to release the information.

Ugh. So over this!

so over this.

Yeah, I am so over this. I mean, he’s an affirmative action admission from the inner city in L.A. — this politically correct campus isn’t going to do anything to him even if he knocks over a bank.

10:51am racist much?! I wouldn’t be surprised if it was Wright who wrote that…he seems have given a QUOTE in every article about this kid. Has anyone noticed?

Please contact me if you have a problem with A.A. Because clearly your a racist

1:54 - Well maybe its just me, but it seems that Jeff Wright would be the logical person to contact. He was the runner-up in the election and just so happens to be one of the most well respected and high profile members of the body that some people were looking to to discipline Delgado.

2:07 - Being opposed to affirmative action doesn’t make you a racist. In fact, I would go so far as to say that supporting affirmative action makes you a racist. Treating people differently based solely upon their race seems pretty racist to me.

So the BH writes an article that reports facts incorrectly. Funny that the article is about an event that occurred at the Union but no one interviewed any Union managers. Surprisingly, the information provided by the prosecutor is not correct…….

I happen to know Delgado personally and he is a good man who made a bad mistake. Calling him out of his name does nothing, yes something needs to be done, but racist name calling will not help anyone! As for the post that calls him an affirmative action thug.you clearly dont know him well. Delgado is a smart man who made a dumb mistake!

And what does affirmative action has to do with stealing tickets anyway! Stick with the facts!

Jeff Wright is respected by whom? I’ve never even heard of the guy… he sounds like a sore loser who’s mad at the world…btw, BH is just a credible as Wikipedia..what a joke.

user-pic

well 12:15am, please clue us in. The kid admitted doing it, pled guilty, and chalked it up to a ‘learning experience.’ — what did we miss?

user-pic

stick to the facts? Okay, the fact is that he is an affirmative action admission. He is not qualified to be here. He excels at nothing academically. He is a frontrunner, meaning a phony with a capital “F,” who has no depth.

Got it? If you steal, you cannot be Senior Class President… unless, of course, your an affirmative action admission.

2:46am Where is all this talk of affirmitive action coming from? So if he were white and was caught stealing that would make the situation better??

Leave RACE out of it.

p/s I’ve had Delgado in a class or two and he’s a nice guy.
