Nine student orgs denied SAC space

Governing board revokes offices because of policy violations, lack of use of facilities

The Student Activities Center Governing Board decided Sunday to deny office space to nine different student organizations that did not meet the requirements to use the space.

According to a statement released Monday by the Associated Students of Madison, groups denied office space include Collegians for a Constructive Tomorrow, Student Labor Action Coalition, Wisconsin Singers, Retail Club, Student Emergency Medical Services, Figure Skating Club, Kappa Delta Chi, Sigma Delta Epsilon and the Hmong American Student Association.

The criteria for use of an office space require an organization to be a Registered Student Organization, to not have intentional policy violations in the last two years, to be a General Student Services Fund group or have 10 active members, and to use the space for a minimum of five hours a week.

The Retail Club, Kappa Delta Chi, Sigma Delta Epsilon, the Hmong American Student Association, Figure Skating Club and Student Emergency Medical Services did not meet the requirement of using the space for at least five hours per week, according to Lauren Vollrath, chair of SACGB.

“We want to make sure the space is being used effectively. If you drop it down to less than one hour a day, it’s not using the space to its highest extent,” Vollrath said.

Vollrath added Kappa Delta Chi did not meet the member requirement, as there are less than 10 active members in its organization.

CFACT lost eligibility because SAC custodial staff found empty alcohol containers in CFACT’s office and the organization repeatedly took furniture from the commons area without returning it — a violation of SACGB requirements.

“We think SACGB has made a bad choice, and we believe there is a misunderstanding. They said our violations were intentional; we say they are absolutely not. The office is a place for discussions and it’s always very open. We get people to drop by and foster dialogue,” said Christina Wilson, Midwest direct adviser to the University of Wisconsin chapter of CFACT.

SLAC’s violations include a recent policy violation of omitting ASM logos from ASM-sponsored events it held and not being a registered student organization at this time.

Jan Van Tol, UW senior and SLAC member, said he did not see adequate justification for the SACGB decision. SLAC has had the office space since the SAC opened in 2008. He added the office is used regularly for storage and group meetings.

CFACT and SLAC plan to appeal the decision to the Student Judiciary Board; however, the date these appeals will take place was undecided.

As for Wisconsin Singers, Vollrath said they brought a dog into the SAC without permission.

“The issue is that it’s not SAC policy, it’s University System’s policy. They said they had permission and they did not,” Vollrath said.

Vollrath said there are 36 open office spaces in the SAC and 81 applications for the 2010-11 year. She added there will be more applications turned away as awareness and popularity of the SAC grows.

SLAC IS a registered org: http://cfli.wisc.edu/sooform/search/orginfo.asp?RegHistoryID=13802

It’s in the directory for registered student orgs for 2009-2010. I’m assuming this qualifies as ‘at this time’ ?

SLAC was not denied because of RSO status. They were only denied based on violations of Finance Committee policy.

The SAC opened in January of 2009, not in 2008 as stated in the article.
