Grainger reopened after evacuation

Trucks respond to reports of smoke at business school, flames found in wall after search; classes returned to normal by 1:30 p.m.

UPDATE: As of 1:30 p.m., Grainger was reopened to students.

Officials said Grainger Hall will remain evacuated until a fire reported this afternoon is completely extinguished.

Sergeant Kurt Feavel of the University of Wisconsin Police Department said the fire was reported shortly after 12:00 p.m. today. Six fire trucks were then dispatched to the scene, where a fire was discovered in a wall.

Seavel said the fire was located on the second floor of the building at the corner of Park Street and University Avenue. Motorists and pedestrians were asked to avoid the area.

Some students on the scene reported seeing smoke or flames. Others said they had thought the alarm to be false, leading them to choose to leave their belongings within the building.

We were let in 5 minutes after this report came in. The building smells like smoke, but there is no visible damage in the first two floors.
