An impromptu walk out by three members of Associated Students of Madison Student Council prevented members from covering all of their agenda items at their Wednesday meeting.

The special meeting was called to introduce the Union Naming Referendum to the council to be voted on at the next Student Council meeting March 10. The ultimate goal of the Union Naming Referendum is to allow University of Wisconsin students to vote on four potential names for the new Union South building in the ASM spring elections.

The referendum was passed on to the next meeting.

The council additionally discussed the ASM Intern Projects and interns for the Shared Governance, Legislative Affairs and Student Activity Center Governing Board had their intern projects approved.

However, an intern project for Academic Affairs was a major point of debate. The intern is working on a project to collaborate student organizations and students looking to volunteer called the Madison Community Academic Outreach project.

Because the council must approve all intern projects, a decision was delayed. However, interns on all committees are already three weeks into their respective projects.

The intern project is a four-credit class, and the drop date for classes is March 15.

To vote ‘no’ on the intern project would effectively cancel the intern’s three weeks of work, Rep. Colin Ingram said.

ASM Chair Tyler Junger said the project may not be something ASM wants to invest in. He said the intern project has turned into focusing on facilitating volunteer opportunities in the Morgridge Center.

If the Morgridge Center has problems, they should seek their own interns, Junger said.

Student Services Finance Committee Chair and Rep. Brandon Williams said there is too much time and money spent on each intern to have projects the council are wary about.

Academic Affairs Chair Jonah Zinn was not present at the council meeting to speak to the progress the intern has made on his project.

Council members, including Rep. Max Love, who later walked out of the meeting, felt there was not enough adequate information to make a decision.

The council decided to push the final vote to their next meeting March 10.

Before the council could finish the items on their agenda, three members of the council walked out.

While Rep. Colin Ingram left for personal reasons, Love left because he did not feel the committee should be making decisions on the Academic Affairs intern project without the intern or Zinn present. Rep. Theo Sharpe left at the same time as Love.

Without the presence of quorum, the council could make no binding decisions.

The council heard the reports of the committee chairs. Student Activity Center Governing Board Chair Katy Ziebell said she has not yet heard back from her legal counsel and is not averse to pushing office allocations back another week.

The council also congratulated Williams on his presentation of the SSFC budgets to Chancellor Biddy Martin Wednesday.
