Students who went to Library Mall hoping to have a relaxing quiet moment were thwarted Thursday afternoon as Hanson’s ’90s hit “MMMBop” blasted through the air.
The Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity, known as the Skulls, played “MMMBop” on a continuous loop from 12:30 - 5 p.m. for a good cause.
The fraternity was raising money for Children’s HeartLink, a non-profit organization that aims to help children with congenital heart disease in developing nations.
A flier passed out by fraternity members made it clear they would not stop playing the song until they hit their target donation number or ran out of time.
One member, UW junior Morgan Lippitt, interned for Children’s HeartLink and said the event was designed to create a fun and playful atmosphere to raise money for the organization.
“There are 14 sites, and physicians go to hospitals and teach them how to prevent, treat and cure congenital heart disease,” Lippitt said. “Plus it’s small and administrative fees are small, so most of the money goes to the cause and a small donation goes a long way.”
Members said they had wanted to help a non-profit organization for a while.
The target amount of money the Skulls wanted to raise was $2,000, UW senior and fraternity president Brian Schaeffer said.
Another member,
UW sophomore Ryan Campagna, added the music would help the cause.
“I like Hanson,” Campagna said. “I think actually a lot of people like it.”
“MMMBop” and the members’ fundraising efforts paid off. Around 4 p.m., the fraternity estimated donation totals to be between $500 and $600, according to Schaeffer. The final count was $1,098.35.
“I think [‘MMMBop’] is a little much,” Schaeffer added. “But some people seem to be enjoying it.”
Schaeffer also said the Skulls are working with their alumni association in an effort to have them match the donations the fraternity raised.
One group of students who gave money to the Skulls’ cause said they donated because of the creativity of the event, along with the sunshine and fun song.

As I walked through Library Mall Friday, (I’m embarrassed to admit) Hanson put a little extra energy in my step. Sorry I missed that it was a fundraiser!
