UW student suffers serious head wound, struck by falling picture

Police confirm frame fell from top floor balcony of Kappa Kappa Sig house

A 19-year-old University of Wisconsin woman is currently in the hospital with a head wound after being struck by a picture frame that had fallen from a balcony early Saturday morning.

According to the police report, the woman had been walking behind a building on the 100 block of Langdon Street when she was hit in the head with the wooden picture frame, which had come from an upper balcony.

Sgt. June Groehler with the Madison Police Department confirmed the address of the house the picture frame fell from was 124 Langdon St., the location of the Kappa Kappa Sigma fraternity house. She could not comment further as to the woman’s condition or the nature of the incident.

The woman was taken to the hospital with a deep head wound after being struck. MPD officers are now investigating how the picture frame came to fall from the building, the report said.

The report did not state how or why the picture frame was on the balcony and fell off, or whether it was thrown.

Ald. Bryon Eagon, District 8, said he was not familiar with the incident but that, in general, there was a unique set of circumstances this weekend. The Mifflin Street Block Party took place Saturday, contributing to a large consumption of alcohol on campus.

Random incidents like this have a higher likelihood of taking place during types of events where heavy drinking does occur, Eagon added.

“Anytime you have thousands of people who consume a lot of alcohol converging in a small area, these events are more likely to occur,” Eagon said.

Eagon added heavy drinking does not excuse any incident like this, especially if the frame was in fact thrown.

Generally, injuries via objects falling from upper balconies are not a huge occurrence on campus, but they certainly can occur when people have been drinking, Eagon added.

He said it would be “obviously foolish and irresponsible” if the picture frame had somehow been thrown off of the balcony and had not just fallen off.

Conor Johnson of Kappa Kappa Sigma said the fraternity was not commenting on the situation, but are complying with the school and Madison authorities.

Why am I not surprised at all that I woke up this morning to find this story? This girl has gotten a lot of attention over this and instead of worrying about things like academics and finals, she is worried about people talking about her and spreading rumors. I wish you would have a little compassion and not make this situation blown out of proportion any more than it needs to be, for her sake. Also, if you just HAVE to write a story like this, you should probably get your facts straight. It was Kappa Sigma not Kappa Kappa Sigma.

its kappa sigma, not kappa kappa sigma

Pretty sure it’s just Kappa Sigma

The only reason this is in the paper is because it happened at a frat. If this had happened anywhere else on campus no one would feel the need to write an article about it in the paper that gave no info at all. Thanks for letting us know that people can be stupid when they drink. shocker.

What a surprise that the Badger Herald just can’t resist writing any article that has to do with a greek house. Oh wow, a girl got hurt by some drunk idiots on Mifflin. Huuuuge deal. If this had happened at college court, no one would have heard about it. I’m not at all trying to defend the greek system as the greatest group of people or even as model students for this campus, but your bias against us is so obvious it is absurd. As a journalism student, all I can say is that I have no idea what is going on at your newspaper, but it certainly isn’t journalism. And for a paper that claims to have so much authority to write about the greek system, the fact that you can’t even get the correct name of one of the largest houses on campus shows that you will accept any novice article without the simplest fact checking, as long as it disparages the greek system. This article says NOTHING that that headline doesn’t say. You have BS comments about the commonality of drunk accidents on Mifflin from an alderman who knew nothing about the incident—awesome investigative work, BH!

badger herald cant get anything right about the greek system

Clearly this is not a reliable article if the author can’t properly identify the name of the fraternity. She was not simply “walking by” when all of a sudden a picture fell on her. It was a composite, the large wooden pictures hung with all the members. It belonged to a sorority and it was purposely thrown off their roof top during a pre-Mifflin party. It was stupid for them to think it was okay to chuck a huge composite like this off the roof.

user-pic

they obviously threw it, without any doubt

ASO to shitty journalism.

user-pic

Seriously BH? As every journalism student learns in j202 making a fact error like this would result in an F. The fact that you could make an error like this about such a large piece of information, like the name of the fraternity where the girl was injured, totally discredits you as a journalist.

What a surprise that the story about a girl getting hit with a stolen composite that was thrown off a balcony and being sent to the hospital ends up in the back pages of the Badger Herald.. let’s safe the front page stories for the Jewish fraternities that lost $80 of the deposit at the Overture Center. Fuck all of you anti-Semitic assholes.

Kappa Sigma guys get drunk and throw tvs and stuff off their balcony every weekend during football season. Signe should be writing about this and how dangerous the drunken actions of Kappa Sig guys are. Its unfortunate how it took a poor girl getting seriously injured to bring this to the community’s attention. Its fortunate, however, that she will be able to recover and wasn’t killed. Its a good thing that this fraternity will likely be losing their house at the end of this year. Thank you Signe for the article and continue to report on Kappa Sigma.

Those elusive Kappa Kappa Sigmas! Damn them! hahaha

user-pic

Kappa Sigma is not losing their house, nor their charter. And, calling the fraternity by the wrong name is just evidence that the Badger Herald (and Signe) blatantly report lies about the Greek system. They’d clearly rather print vitreous rumor, than make an effort to unbiasedly report. The Badger Herald used to be a respected publication; now it seems that it’s resorted to tabloid ploys instigated by mediocre “journalists” who will most likely have journalistic careers of little to no significance. It’s absolutely embarrassing and appalling.

How about you all grow up and take responsibility for the fact that “it happened” and no one is bashing anyone…just stating facts. Things “happen” in life and thank goodness it was not more serious. Another life lesson learned the hard way!
