Crime in Brief

REGENT STREET

Robbery

Madison police responded to a robbery at the Open Pantry on the 1300 block of Regent Street Saturday night. According to a MPD incident report, a man approximately 40 years old wearing a purple hoodie entered the store, grabbed a soda and showed a handgun. He then went behind the counter, grabbed money and fled, according to the report. MPD Lt. Jennifer Krueger-Favour said police are still searching for the suspect.

LAKE STREET

Creeper

A University of Wisconsin senior landed in MPD custody Thursday morning when he removed the screen from the front window of a residence on the 600 block of Lake Street, another MPD report said. Gregory Laffen, 21, was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and unlawful trespass after he tried to enter the home of two women, ages 20 and 21. Laffen was arrested in Library Mall after the two women called 911 and followed him after he fled, according to the report.

NORTH SIDE

Robbery

A UW student was the victim of a robbery on Madison’s North Side Wednesday evening while walking home after his chartered bus broke down, an MPD report said. The victim told police two males in their late teens asked him to give them his possessions at the corner of North Street and Johnson Street. The suspects, who were riding mountain bikes, took the victim’s phone, backpack and wallet after flashing a handgun that was attached to what the victim said looked like a silencer.

WEST TOWNE MALL

iPhone Thief

Modern technology led to the arrests of a Madison teenager Thursday when, according to an MPD report, GPS location services helped police track down two Apple iPhones that had been stolen from the Apple Store at West Towne Mall. The report said 19 year-old Jamal Jackson made it to a PDQ gas station on Fish Hatchery Road before MPD apprehended him and returned the iPhones to the West Towne Apple Store.
