Today’s Republican state primary presents two opportunities for the students of the University of Wisconsin. First and foremost, it gives students a chance to select the Republican candidate who will run against incumbent Sen. Russ Feingold in November’s general election, candidates for Congress and a variety of local posts. Secondly, it gives students a chance to increase voter turnout and prove to both parties their vote should be considered in the upcoming months of campaigning. For these reasons, it is of immense importance that students on this campus make their way to the polls today, regardless of party preference.

At a time when reminders to vote touch nearly every corner and kiosk in downtown Madison, the excuses for failing to register are unacceptable. We applaud the efforts of the New Voters Project as well as similar movements that promote voter registration. Their actions are extremely beneficial in motivating voter interest. We only hope those who penned their signatures will do their parts.

For those who have failed to register, doing so at the polls on the day of election is remarkably easy. It only requires two things: an age of at least 18 at the time of the election and a valid Wisconsin ID or two pieces of mail with one’s Wisconsin address. Poll locations can be found within this newspaper.

While many statewide and national legislators have disregarded the student interest on a range of issues, including the state government’s continual budget cuts for the UW System, students’ voices must be heard. Let them know the student vote matters. Let them know students care about the cost of higher education. Make the effort — it’s your right.
