It’s all about the Benjamins

We are firm believers in the method of consistent reminding. One rally, one article and one protest are not enough to send a message. The student body must continue their plea for help.

University of Wisconsin students are stuck with a hefty tuition bill every semester. Students must pay their bill in one large chunk whether it be through financial aid, hard-earned cash or gracious parental assistance.

Students can no longer afford tuition. It’s the price students pay for attending a tier-one university — but a state school should be doing more to help its students afford an education, not push them away.

Wisconsin consistently complains of the lack of graduate retention. However, how can a state complain of such a thing when it does little to fund their top university? UW is losing faculty, students and researchers.

UW is becoming privatized with tuition rising to private university costs. This university relates more closely to a private school than a public school, and UW System data shows that student families are richer than ever. It makes sense.

We recognize that tuition hikes are a nationwide problem, but UW’s problem soars above the rest. Tuition has increased an average of 11 percent at universities nationwide this year, but an astounding 40 percent at UW over the past two years.

Administrators are not listening and the state is not listening. Students are not being taken seriously. UW administrators, you’re going to lose students.

Students must band together and make their voices heard. We need to continue the rallies, protests and articles to stop the detrimental effects before they start in full swing.
