Why don’t we do it in the road?

With spring break under the belts of University of Wisconsin students, attention has turned toward the infamous Mifflin Street Block Party that typically ends the semester on a high note with one last hurrah before finals.

However, questions are still flying and calls are flowing into area newspapers asking, “What day will the party be?” The debate began weeks ago regarding whether the block party should be held as tradition has it, the first Saturday in May, this year May 7, which happens to be UW’s study day. Those arguing in favor of preserving the study day are pushing for the block party be moved to April 30, the week prior.

The debate has reached a point of sheer absurdity. It is time to pick a day and end the controversy. Academic calendars are released years in advance; the Madison Police Department should have taken note of when finals fall and acknowledged these exams before signing contracts with officers ensuring the block party is appropriately staffed. Ignoring the academic calendar is irresponsible and has proven problematic.

Mifflin Street Block Party has been a reasonably peaceful event in past years because of great cooperation between students and officers. Madison must keep this event under control by clarifying the day, ensuring police officers will be present and looking toward another successful festivity.

Perhaps the reason no one is talking is to keep out-of-town partiers away. Whatever the case may be, there is no reason to continue debating. Students have become indifferent and are merely seeking an answer.

By not declaring a day the Madison Police Department is making a huge problem for themselves. And it is too late for the problem to be reversed. Now they are going to need officers present on both days, as many visitors, myself including had to get our airplane tickets by now if we are traveling long distances. They should have figured this out before the school year even started.
