Shock, awe, as president does right

Most people who know me would tell you that I'm not President George W. Bush's biggest fan.

Actually, it's unlikely a single person I've come into contact with over the last five years is unaware of my feelings toward "W." My cynical reactions to any Bush quote/policy/mistake are fairly obvious, I verbally criticize the man at a rate comparable to that with which he commits verbal gaffes, and the number of times I've chastised him in my articles borders on incalculable.

To be frank, there is almost nothing about this presidency that I do not abhor. From its extreme secrecy to its imperial power to its constant spin to its major corporate influences to its neglect of anyone who is less than super wealthy, nearly every aspect of this administration sickens me.

And yet, in a freak incident, I was recently forced to do the unthinkable: take a stance of supporting George W. Bush.

Last week, as the public learned that a company based in United Arab Emirates was going to take control of several U.S. ports, George Bush began to take major heat for allowing such an acquisition to take place. In making his decision, the president apparently adhered solely to his belief in the righteousness of laissez faire capitalism.

Now, allow me to first point out that a.) I am as skeptical as anyone about U.S. ports being ceded to a company whose home country contains a populace as hostile toward Americans as U.A.E.'s and that b.) I am ardently opposed to Bush's blind faith in the free market. In fact, overall, I believe that the president's decision to allow the port transaction was ill-advised and potentially dangerous.

With that said, it is time to extend rare praise to George W. Bush. While I oppose the president's decision, I feel compelled to laud him for making it.

In allowing Dubai Ports World (the U.A.E. company poised to acquire U.S. ports) to make this purchase, George W. Bush is sticking to his guns. Although stubbornly resisting compromise is nothing new for this administration, this particular instance is unique.

The President is simultaneously upsetting his party, infuriating the American public and giving Democrats new ammunition in an important election year — all in the name of principle. His decision has the potential to mortally wound an already unpopular administration. Essentially, Bush has nothing to gain from his choice. Regardless, he is apparently so dedicated to his capitalist values that he is unwilling to waver in a stand which could prove to be his demise.

As hard as it is to commend a man whom I believe to be one of the worst things ever to happen to this country, the commendation must be made.

Politics is a sleazy business. Seeing a career politician stand on principle in the face of almost universal disapproval is perhaps the rarest spectacle on the planet. Anytime this phenomenon occurs, I feel a certain amount of respect must be paid, regardless of said phenomenon's misguidance.

In a few days, I'll go back to bitching about the cancer on American society that is this administration, but, for a moment, I am stopping to tip my hat to the president.

The coming weeks will prove whether George Bush's bold decision will have a massive impact on the political scene. Perhaps Bush will prematurely gain "lame duck" status resulting from his controversial stand. Perhaps Dubai Ports World will quietly take possession of U.S. ports while a forgetful American public looks on. But regardless of his decision's consequences, the President has, for a second, gained my admiration.

So, here's to you, George W. Bush; you have finally done something praiseworthy.

And, by the way, don't get me wrong — although I am forced to extend him due congratulations for making his decision, I still hope this debacle brings "W" down.

Rob, you and your unwavering faith in the indoctrination of your left leaning professors are the true cancer. If you are lucky in life you will not end up a journalist and after taking a real job, where results are more important than expressing opinions, and maybe starting a family you will look back in awe at how stupid most of the things you believed and wrote during your college days in Madison. Churchill was only half right when saying if your not conservative when your 30 you have no brain. He should have said if your not liberal when your young you must not be paying attention in school or trying to get some tail.

Oh and buy the way Bush will not be running in 2006 or 2008 so start the GOP wants to kill the elderly, starve the kids, force bible study on the populace and allow terrorists to invade our ports. Scare the old, scare the young unwed mothers, scare scare scare. To many people are getting college degrees to fall for that same old gunk. You see the old keep living longer, the poor kids are all getting way to fat and not all conservatives are on Pat Robertsons speed dial.

Whatever gets you through the night…… unitl your brain wakes up and informs you that you are your best hope in life not some smarty pants in D.C. Of course if you become a billionaire capitalism does not require you to gold plate your toilet like sometime Democrat Donald Trump.

Enjoy.

So you don’t have a problem with Communist China running our ports, right? The fact that 13 out of 14 ports in Long Beach are run by foreign companies doesn’t upset you? You just hat all Muslims, right? Have you investigated ANY of this? Do you know what they mean when they say “take over” our ports? Or are you just Bush bashing because you can? Thought so.

The reason you hate Bush and his administration is because you are a coward and a traitor to this country.

God Bless Bush.

Did any of you idiots even READ the article? He PRAISES Bush!!

He praises him for about 3 lines while he takes pot shots like only a college farce would.

Rob, your understanding of capitalism is misguided. A government wouldn’t be able to sell anything to anyone - only individuals or companies could sell anything in a capitalist system. Capitalism means: separation of government and economy. (You won’t be taught that as a poli sci student at UW, though. Remember, politics is a branch of philosphy, not a separate “island.”)

Ha ha ha! Is someone a traitor if they don’t want American security thrown away in favor of giving a private company (with ties to 9/11, remember that?) control over our ports?

So the people who think their was no Al Qaeda, or terror ties in Iraq, regardless of any direct planning of 9/11. They can’t seem to grasp that Al Zwahiri, a known Al Qaeda member, was resting and healing up after fleeing Jordan under the protective wing of Sadam. But the fact that money went through banks in the UAE is a huge problem. Didn’t banks in the U.S. clear transfers from the UAE to support the 19 hijackers? Should we limit their commercial activity based on the outcomes and intentions? The fact is that the UAE is a comfortable place for money to rest in the Middle East. Much like the Swiss enjoy in Europe or the Caymans to the U.S.

As for our ports, the real arguement is regarding security which Dubai Ports will not be responsible for. What we need is a bunch of overpaid Federal (Union) Employees running around the ports making 90 year old grandmothers take of their shoes. It will acheive nothing, but then when have the democrates ever cared about a new federal program actually working. When the programs don’t work it is always because the GOP didn’t let them spend enough.

It is fun watching people get stuck on stupid, but growing up has a habit of fixing that eventually.
