Opinion: Letter

Coverage betrays committed fans

I am appalled that you would ever print those letters (“Instill some Badger terror,” “Get to the games on time”) about fan dedication in Monday’s paper. I am even more appalled that you did not report on the horrendous handling of the student section by the athletic department.

At two minutes before halftime, students were still being escorted to their seats because of this idiotic wristband system. Throughout the halls you could hear these dedicated and furious fans screaming, “Let us in!” While I was lucky enough to get in at kickoff, I waited over 20 minutes in the halls. That means I, along with hundreds of other students were on time and not allowed in!

What the hell? You actually have the audacity to print this? Did anyone actually watch the student section? We were taken to our seats — single file — by a police officer, and told what our seat number was! We are dedicated, hardcore football fans and now people are blaming us for what happened?

I feel terrible for the football players. Most of us were there well before kickoff but couldn’t show our support because we were forced to stay in the halls. Now, because you decided to print this, it makes it look like all we care about is drinking! This new system is bullshit, and you should be helping us to get the old system back so that we can get to our seats on time, not 45 minutes after we get there!

I hope you print this. I hope you are ashamed of yourselves, and I hope you apologize to every pissed off, dedicated football fan who was offended by what was printed!

I lost a lot of respect for you as a newspaper today. Next time, put a little thought into what you print. Do people seriously think that we’d show up that late and come in single file? Ha! What a joke.

A seriously pissed off football fan,

Leann — Thanks for your explanation from the student persepctive. As an alum and season ticket holder I was wondering why it took the students so long to get into the stadium. I know we have the best fans in the country and they want to be there, especially when season tickets aren’t a guarantee for any student who wants them like they were back when I was at UW (which is a travesty) — Hopefully the UW fixes the seating stystem and lets everyone in when they get there, AND hopefully they let every student who wants tickets get them, after all it is their team! GO RED!

Students wanting to voice their concerns about the current student seating procedures would be wise to contact their two ASM representatives to the Athletic Board. Their names and e-mail addresses can be found on the electronic directory for the Athletic Board:
