Opinion: Letter

Show unity on Peace Day

The University of Wisconsin-Madison is no stranger to political rallies, war protests and other forms of public assembly. Rarely, however, is the campus used as a stage for unity — bringing together the university and community; conservatives and liberals; the religious and non-religious; athletes, artists and academics.

Why is this the case? Day after day, news outlets shower labels — some invited, and others not — on entire swaths of people across the country and world. Pundits claiming to represent millions force stereotypes on their adversaries. Too often, political leaders appeal to our differences and subcategories rather than the common desires that unite us. Here on campus, students are regularly invited to celebrate their uniqueness — whether it is professional, cultural, religious or philosophical.

Obviously, such recognitions of personal identity are not without reason. Many of us take pride in our families, ethnicities, religious traditions, gender and other orientations of identity. We often disagree strongly with one another’s policy prescriptions and perceptions of history. However, at the end of the day, no matter how strongly we feel, there is one thing we refuse to allow ourselves or others to deny even our fiercest opponents: their dignity as human beings. We recognize that dignity is best enjoyed in an atmosphere of peace.

In honor of that commitment and the millions that have served or perished in the pursuit of peace, we, along with over a dozen other student groups, are putting aside our differences and uniting to commemorate Peace Day at UW on Sept. 21 on Library Mall. This gathering is part of a worldwide celebration of the International Day of Peace. We strongly encourage all students and community members to join us in doing the same.

Color me underwhelmed. This is merely another empty gesture from the empty suits at the UN, who arbitrarily declared International Day of Peace on September 21 to coincide with the openning session of their parliament of thugs. It merely offers these unelected “representatives” a stage to posture and pretend they’re relevant.

What are the odds their UN globaloney gestures will actually convince the Religion of Peace(Tm) jihadists to observe their farcical “cease fire”?
