After allegations of hazing surfaced last Friday afternoon, Band Director Mike Leckrone suspended the band indefinitely, including during last Saturday’s football game against Ohio State. According to Leckrone, the hazing allegations are alcohol-related and involve inappropriate sexual conduct. The situation appears to be very similar to misconduct on another trip to
Leckrone was given a short period of time Friday to make a decision about the band’s future, leading him to issue the indefinite suspension. We applaud Leckrone’s quick action in suspending the band. Although the mistakes of a few resulted in the penalization of many, there does not appear to be an immediate, viable alternative Leckrone could have taken considering the seriousness of the matter.
Additionally, we hope the immature actions of a handful of students do not tarnish the distinguished career Leckrone has had at UW. The Wisconsin Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award winner’s legacy should be based on the music he and the band have created, as he built the program into one of the nation’s best.
While Leckrone’s actions have been commendable, we are concerned about Chancellor Biddy Martin’s involvement — or lack thereof — in the process.
Martin did not attend Friday’s press conference with Leckrone, Dean of Students Lori Berquam and Gary Sandefur, dean of the
Two years ago when hazing allegations surfaced, it was then-Chancellor John Wiley who put his foot down, meeting with the group as a whole and putting them on probation. No additional allegations surfaced during the remainder of his tenure as chancellor.
In the future, when the national spotlight is placed on UW, we expect Martin to step up and represent the university and immediately show her support for her administration and faculty.
We hope the issues with the band are settled quickly, as the band serves as an integral part of the

Why do we care if there is hazing again?

Good editorial (I’m glad you’re not making excuses for the band), but I strongly disagree with your assessment of Mike Leckrone. This is the same guy that two years ago wondered aloud whether he has control over the band anymore, and it was pretty clear then that any future hazing incidents would cost him his job.
It’s all well and good to call on the band to be accountable for their actions, but the buck stops with Mike Leckrone. This is (at least) twice in two years now, and I think he’s proven that he simply can’t handle the job anymore.

I don’t understand why you believe that Mike Leckrone not be penalized for the actions of the band that he is the leader of. The buck definitely stops with Mike Leckrone. If he does not have control over the members in his band then he is not fit to lead the band. He may have had an illustrious carreer, but based on recent accusations, he needs to go.

I couldn’t disagree more with comment which calls for the resignation of Professor Mike Leckrone. He unilaterally took control of a situation, when the administration of this University failed to do so. He showed a zero-tolerance policy, and demonstrated the leadership and responsibility that he’s known for.
With hundreds of students on the UW band, it is impossible to ask that he babysits all the members of the band whenever they travel.
It disgusts me that certain band members do not show the respect that’s deserved for our University, the band, and most of all their dedicated director.
I applaud Mike Leckrone and I couldn’t agree more with the Editorial Board on this commentary.

Before you make hasty statements about the job status of Leckrone, you should probably wait to find out if the alleged incidents took place at a band function or on the members own time. I don’t see how he can be held responsible for what the band members do on their own time.

The Badger Herald is definitely the #1 source for hazing info. at this University. When will you start a hazing hot-line so we can immediately hear the condemnation for all “hazing” activities on campus and not have to wait till the next morning for the dirt!

Does anyone care about the victims? Stop calling it hazing; sexual misconduct is sexual misconduct. Period.
