Opinion: Letter

Labuz ignorant on tourism

Thank you to Joey Labuz for highlighting plans for the renovation of Peace Park in his Sept. 1 opinion titled, “Peace Park plan a Band-Aid solution.”

However, contrary to Labuz’s assertion that “we don’t exactly have an influx of foreigners badgering Badgers for directions,” downtown Madison is very much a bustling tourist destination. The university, Monona Terrace, Wisconsin state Capitol, Overture Center, State Street and the Square draw millions of visitors from around the region, the country and the world. Visitors spend an estimated $70 million annually on downtown shopping and dining alone, contributing significantly to the city’s economy.

The planned Visitor Center will serve as a new year-round home for our Downtown Information Ambassador program. Our ambassadors serve nearly 28,000 people each year from seasonal booths on State Street, where we provide directions, maps, event information, and shopping and dining suggestions, all much-needed and appreciated by visitors. Our ambassador program also partners with UW Visitor & Information programs, Admissions, the Wisconsin Alumni Association and the Parent Program to help welcome new students, their parents and alumni. We know from direct experience that the planned Visitor Center is needed and will enhance the downtown experience for visitors and residents alike. We look forward to seeing you at the new Visitor Center next year! In the meantime, stop by our Downtown Information booths or see Visitdowntownmadison.com.

I think we really need to reevaluate what is deemed NEEDED in this society. We use it way too loosely these days.
