In the Nov. 5 editorial, “Tell ICE to cool it,” the Herald Editorial Board took the stance that Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen and the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement were misguided in their arrest and deportation of 34 illegal immigrants, all of whom had already been charged with criminal activities. The board made a legitimate point in saying that the 34 should have been deported immediately upon conviction of a crime (and undoubtedly being found residing here illegally). However, the Herald is way off base on their other claims.
The Herald states that the police should not “divert resources from fighting crime to go after otherwise law-abiding illegal immigrants.” The amount of contradictions in that statement is staggering. Crime is defined as “unlawful activity,” and by being here illegally these people are committing crimes. To say they are “otherwise law-abiding” is completely forgetting that these people were already convicted of crimes unrelated to immigration. The Herald makes itself sound silly in stating that an “illegal immigrant” who has been convicted of a crime already is “law-abiding.”
The “culture of fear” clich� is thrown around a lot, as the Herald itself notes, but once again it is called upon here to denounce the deportation of illegal immigrants. I consider myself part of the American and Wisconsin culture. Disregarding the fact that these people are here illegally, they were all convicts as well. To have convicts on the streets continuing to commit crimes (being here illegally) makes me, as a member of the culture, fearful.
Finally, The Badger Herald asks for less “breaking down doors” and more doing “what is good and just for the state and all its residents.” The police should do whatever is lawfully in their power to keep this state just and good. By “breaking down doors” of people breaking the law and stopping them from doing so, Wisconsin is safer and more “just.” That is true whether you are living on the other side of the state or down the street from these 34 illegal immigrant convicts. To think otherwise is to support anarchy and belittle the efforts of legal immigrants.
And I thought that was only a Daily Cardinal thing.

I will never understand how people think catching and deporting illegals is wrong. Millions of Mexicans and others have invaded our country, breaking so many laws to remain here, such as ID fraud, driving without a license or insurance, tax evasion in many instances, etc. The police are hired to enforce the laws…period. If a criminial illegal (Yes, they are ciminals just by entering illegally) is found, they should be deported immediately. The “culture of fear” is because the illegals KNOW they are breaking laws and are fearful of being caught. If these losers come here LEGALLY none of this would be an issue. Everyone agrees that illegal immigrants are breaking the law. The point is that it shouldn’t be considered a crime to be in this country. The law is unjust and should be repealed.
At one time it was illegal for a black man to be in this country except as property. If a black man tried to live freely, he was breaking the law, but he was not actually committing a crime in the moral sense of the word. The law was wrong, because they black man’s behavior was not actually criminal in nature, yet he was being punished for it.
The same argument applies to immigrants. The law is wrong. They have every right to be in this country.

The issue is not procedural - of following some simple rules to get into the country. We actively prohibit and restrict people from entering the country. This is unjust.
The analogy would be if the government said that you couldn’t use the ATM because we have enough of your kind.

Federal laws place quotas on the number of people that can live and work in this country and these quotas vary depending on why you want to enter the country, who you want to work for, and what occupation you are in. You can find out about these laws through the office of immigration.
We spent more than a year trying to hire someone from New Zealand before our government would allow him to move to America. We had to convince them that our company could not have hired anyone in the states before they would allow him in.
The principle of individual rights says that anyone can live here. Individuals have rights because they are individuals. A proper government recognizes and protects these rights, it does not grant them.
Also, the Constitution is not a list of things people are allowed to do, its an enumeration of powers granted to government and act as a limitation on government.
The question is not why government should allow people to freely live and associate with whomever they want, but by what right does the government prohibit these action? There’s no legitimate reason.
