H 18°, L 6°Chancellor Martin’s op-ed addressing the controversy surrounding the Herald’s publication of the Holocaust denial ad (“Truth and Scholarship Greatest Tools in Combating Falsehood”) is a breath of fresh air for those committed to UW-Madison’s core belief in the “sifting and winnowing” of ideas and the freedom of speech that goes with it. In the riveting cacophony of voices that has arisen in response to the Herald’s controversial decision — a decision that nonetheless is consistent with the Herald’s long tradition of courting free speech controversy in a manner that provokes debate and critical thinking — it is reassuring to have a chancellor come down so eloquently and strongly in support of this process without engaging in gratuitous criticism of either the Herald or the Herald’s critics in this complex controversy. And, not surprisingly, the Chancellor has also made clear the obvious: how much our university values its Jewish students and faculty/staff members who have done so much to contribute to our distinctive institutional legacy.
Chancellor Martin’s position represents faith in the ability of the university community to face the pernicious fraud of Holocaust denial and to prove it wrong. The results thus far suggest this is indeed happening, with overwhelming rejection of Holocaust denial taking place in the public forum and a rallying of support behind our Jewish colleagues. The First Amendment and free speech principles demand nothing less from us.

Dear Bystander, The proof is that Aushcwitz had multiple continuously used crematoria, when those were deemed insufficient the Nazi’s burned bodies in open air pits. Every claim that those bodies could not be disposed of fast enough have been refuted by scientific data proving the concentration camps ability to rid itself of that many bodies. If you would like proof of their existence I suggest you look to the plethora of eye witness reports that confirm their existence as well as German SS documents that also confirm their existence. The camp is not perfectly intact because parts of it were destroyed by the SS as the fled, in part to shield themselves from war crime trials. Holocaust denial is wicked and vial hate speech as well as being completely devoid of any truth value. Thank you for your post however, because many people think that such ignorant bigotry against Jews does not exist on this campus and you have proved that neo-nazism and holocaust denial will always be attractive to hateful individuals such as yourself. We know the exact number of ovens Auschwitz operated, and that often as many as 1/3 were not operational. We also know these ovens needed to be rebricked after 1500 hours of use.
We ALSO know Auschwitz had a surplus of ovens, and had offered the Treblinka camp these ovens. Treblinka refused since they had no use for any ovens. ( That fact alone sinks the Treblinka legend).
Not one Auschwitz oven was ever rebricked.
We know the amount of coal shipped to Auschwitz would have allowed for 80,000 cremations.
To suggest open air burning of bodies was carried out on a large scale at Auschwitz is not true.
To begin with, we can only account for 80,000 bodies, those that were cremated in ovens.
Open air cremation is the least effective way to cremate body and 95% or more of the heat is lost. This method is used in places like India for funerals but a massive amount of wood is used for one body. At least 200 pounds of wood per body.
Did Auschwitz get 280,000,000 pounds of wood delivered to the camp? No.
That puts the issue back on sqaure one. Where are the 1,420,000 bodies?
Just think. If we had this discussion in 1985 my question would be: where are the 4,000,000- 80,000 = 3,920,000 bodies.
The Auschwitz answer man helped answer this in 1990.
With a wave of his hand, the curator of the Auschwitz museum made 2,5000,000 of those bodies vanish by clarifying they were never in Auschwitz to begin with.
And yet somehow there are still 6,000,000 victims. That math is above my paygrade.

The burden of proof is on the promoters, not the other way around.
A pile of empty Zklon-b canisters is not proof of homicidal gassings. It is evidence this product was used at Auschwitz, just like it was used at 19,999 OTHER camps to kill lice.
A collection of shoes is not evidence of homicidal gassings, it is evidence person arriving at the camps were given a new set of shoes to wear.
A pile of hair clippings is not proof of homicidal gassings, it is evidence of many people getting their hair cut to reduce the spread of lice.
The Germans left behind records of their actions so we know how much coal was shipped to Auschwitz, how many ovens and the fact that there was no wood shipped to Auschwitz.
If you have some proof of homididal gassings outisde of hearsay of persons who many or may not have been interneed there, what is it?
After all, Dr. Larson, cheif Patholgists of the US Army autopsied thousands of bodies and never found 1 with Zyklon-B in it.
Tell me why the promoters of this holocaustt will not carry out a independent investigation into the grounds at these camps to determine if they were ever used as mass burial grounds?

my great aunts and uncles were killed in the holocaust it happened nazis executed jews they cremated them they burned them they gassed them they shot them they beat them they enslaved them they starved them they DESTROYED them
to even bring in to question or debate the horrific acts that took place is pathetic. You seem to spend your free time by proving the holocaust didnt exist…does that make you any happier as a person? Does it make you feel better about yourself to think that jews are making everything up? Assess your motive, sometimes it is better to keep your mouth shut and let the suffering grieve and mourn rather than claiming their mourning is uncalled for. I KNOW 6million jews, and millions of others, were murdered during the holocaust. I also KNOW, personally, about 7 family members who were 100% murdered at Birkenau- even if the number is only 7, it is still murder and mass killing. The UDHR and Convention on Genocide do not site a specific number when assessing if an event is a genocide/massacre or not. It is defined as the systematic killing, harming, raping of a group of people with the purpose of eradicating them. I think we can all agree on some level that that is what the nazis did to the jews, regardless of scale.
