The 18th-ranked Wisconsin wrestling team fell to 1-3 on the season after losing to No. 11 Northern Iowa, 26-12, on Saturday.
Junior Tony Black gave the Badgers six of their 12 points by pinning Tyler Hubbard at the 6:13 mark of the 125-pound match. Black remains undefeated at 5-0 this season. Also scoring for the Badgers were juniors Kevin Black and Justin Staebler, who earned a pair of decisions at 133 pounds and heavyweight, respectively.
After the Panthers won the first three matches to take a 12-0 lead, Staebler put Wisconsin on the board with a 1-1 double-overtime decision over 10th-ranked Paul Hynek. Tony Black’s pin and Kevin’s 13-8 decision against Mark Manchio evened the score at 12-12.
Wisconsin also fell short against Hofstra on Friday night. The Badgers came back from a 14-4 deficit, but were unable to pull out a victory as Hofstra defeated the Badgers 20-16 in front of 438 fans at the Stoughton Community Building.
The Pride’s Paul Siemon (157 pounds) earned a 5-2 decision over UW sophomore Adam Turner in the final match of the night. Badger junior Kevin Black (133) earned the only fall of the duel, pinning Frank Hoeffner at the 3:42 mark.
Wisconsin lost the first two matches before Ralph DeNisco gave UW a 12-3 major decision over Jason Skretkowicz in the 174-pound bout. Junior Tony Black upset seventh-ranked Tom Noto in an overtime tiebreaker but it wasn’t enough to offset Hofstra victories in seven weight classes.
