The Badgers’ first-round upset win over Michigan in the Big Ten tennis tournament was quickly forgotten as UW dropped its quarterfinals match to No. 2-seed Ohio State.
UW’s 4-3 victory over No. 7 seed Michigan avenged its 6-1 loss to the Wolverines last Sunday. In doubles play, juniors Alex Kasarov and David Hippee defeated Michigan’s Rolf and Vinny Gossain 8-4 at the one spot. The pair of Badgers now stands at 18-3 for the season. At the No. 2 spot, junior Scott Green and frosh Alex Conti took down Chris Shaya and Micheal Rubin 8-6. The No. 3 spot was abandoned at 5-5.
The Badgers continued their success in singles. Kasarov beat Rubin at No. 1, 6-4, 6-2. At No. 2, Hippee took down Jackson 6-4, 6-2. Michigan took the No. 3,4 and 5 spots with victories from Shaya, Anving and Fischer. Wisconsin’s Conti took the No.6 with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Gossain.
Even after their hot play, the Badgers were unable to keep their season alive, losing to OSU 4-0. The No. 10-seed Badgers dropped their Big Ten championships quarterfinals one day after their upset victory. After losing the doubles point and three singles, the Badgers had to abandon three other singles matches.
In No. 1 doubles, Ohio State’s Jeremy Wurtzman and Scott Green defeated juniors Alex Kasarov and Dave Hippee 8-3, making the Badger pair’s record 18-4 overall. Buckeyes Brenton Contini and Ross Wilson took the No. 2 with an 8-3 win over junior Scott Green and frosh Alex Conti. Senior captain Blake Baratz and frosh Ward Bortz were forced to abandon their No. 3 match.
The singles round proved just as difficult for the Badgers. Ohio State’s No. 21 Wurtzman took the No. 1 from Kasarov 6-2, 6-2. At No. 2 and 3, Hippee and Baratz abandoned their matches against No. 32 Vince Ng and Dennis Mertens. The Buckeye’s Phil Metz won 6-1, 6-1 over Green for the No. 4. Bortz abandoned his No. 5 match against Ohio State’s Contini. Wisconsin’s Conti dropped the No. 6 to Wilson 6-0, 6-4.
The Badgers finish their season 6-17, 3-9 in the Big Ten with hopes of sending Hippee and Kasarov to the NCAA championships in Athens, Ga. The tournament begins Friday, May 9 with first and second round action and continues into finals May 17-26. Selections for the tournament will be made in the near future.
