University of Wisconsin seniors who did not receive football season tickets through UW’s lottery are eligible for tickets to today’s game, which will be distributed free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis.
The extra 350 seats are in place of the UW Marching Band, which was suspended until further notice Friday due to alcohol-related hazing and inappropriate sexual behavior during a recent trip to Michigan. Tickets will be distributed starting at 4:30 p.m. today near student gates. To receive free tickets, students must bring a copy of the official university e-mail and their student ID.
There will be no formal half-time show, pre-game show or Fifth Quarter at tonight’s University of Wisconsin football game against Ohio State, officials said Saturday.
UW Senior Associate Athletic Director Vince Sweeney said the decision was made this morning after Band Director Mike Leckrone decided to suspend the band.
“There’s simply nothing we can put together that will even come close to what the band does,” Sweeney said.
The Athletic Department is putting together a series of audio and video content for the halftime and pre-game shows, Sweeney said. Nothing resembling the Fifth Quarter, a long-time Badger tradition, will take place after the game.
“On, Wisconsin,” “If You Want to Be a Badger” and “Varsity” may be played at appropriate times over the speaker system, but Sweeney reiterated it would not have the same effect as when the band plays the songs.
UW’s cheerleading squad and Bucky Badger will still be on the field.
Dean of Students Lori Berquam said her office will investigate the incident and take any appropriate action. She said punishments could range from an official reprimand to expulsion.
The suspension will continue until the investigation is complete. The band will practice Tuesday with the understanding they may not be playing at next Saturday’s game against Penn State, Leckrone said.
This is the first time in at least 40 years — Leckrone’s tenure as band director — the band will not play at a Camp Randall home game.
The Badgers and Buckeyes will kick off at 7 p.m.
