Bryon Eagon served as Madison's district 8 alderman from 2009 to 2011. He is a senior at the University of Wisconsin - Madison majoring in Political Science and Communication Arts. In early 2011 he announced that he would not seek seek re-election.[1]. Eagon was succeeded in the district 8 post by Scott Resnick, whom Eagon endorsed.[2]

Eagon attended high school in Neenah, WI and was raised in the small town of Winneconne before enrolling at UW in the fall of 2006. During his first year on campus, Bryon was elected to the Associated Students of Madison Student Council and also served on the Student Services Finance Committee. Bryon extended his commitment to service abroad by spending the summer of 2007 in Kenya teaching at a high school in the slums of Nairobi. [3]

Early Political involvement

Since arriving at the UW Madison Campus, Bryon Eagon became involved as a student advocate and organizer. He represented students on the ASM Student Council and lead the Students for Obama during the 2008 elections.

Policy Proposals

Bryon Eagon's main goal as city council representative is to provide more campus and downtown safety for students. To this end, he has proposed many solutions:

  • Exclude bar raids because students' safety are needed on the streets, not in bars. Underage drinkers already know the consequences, so they are already better behaved.
  • Propose residential lighting initiative, providing more light in alleys and backyards for late night walkers.
  • Propose neighborhood watch programs will provide a team with flashlights and visible clothing to patrol areas and help keep the walkers feel safe.
  • Establish a Collaborative Safety Organization to organize events.
  • Provide a Support Cab Stand Service for students who are out late downtown.

Additionally, Eagon has advocated greater rights for student tenants. They include:

  • Including tenants' rights in the contract.
  • Requiring building inspectors to give numerical ratings, so landlords can have a better understanding of what improvements are needed.
  • Requiring landlord checks be regulated by setting a specific times and dates.
  • Requiring locks and keypads be updated between tenants.

Campaign for City Council

During his campaign, Eagon garnered notable endorsements to his campaign. One of these was former district 8 alderman Eli Judge. Judge stated that they both share the same views on downtown safety and that he has faith in Eagon's policies.[4] The University of Wisconsin College Democrats also agree, saying that his ideas are practical and realistic.[5]. Eagon also had the support of then-Mayor Dave Cieslewicz.

Political Opponents

Eagon still has a list of worthy opponents to run against. Mark Woulf is also a junior at UW Madison majoring in political science and sociology. His primary focus is on safety, the environment, and tenants' rights. He plans to utilize police resources more for street protection and less for raiding bars.

Jacob J. Schmidt was a junior at UW Madison and majored in economic and political science. His was an intern for state Rep. Scott Newcomer and assistant coordinator for 2008, non-partisan voter education program, "Your Values Matter." Schmidt sought to punish property managers who mislead renters, address violent crime, and provide better sidewalk snow removal for pedestrians and bikers in the winter.

Primary Results

As voters rounded up for the election on Tuesday, February 17, there were less people than expected but votes were still cast at Gordon Commons, Memorial Union, the Memorial Library, and Porchlight. [6] After the votes were counted, the results were:

Candidate % of Vote
Bryon Eagon 50%
Mark Woulf 22%
Katrina Flores 21%
John Schmidt 7%
