Provost, University of Wisconsin-Madison
Patrick Farrell has served as the Provost for the University of Wisconsin since May 3, 2006. As provost, he is second in command to the chancellor regarding the administration of the university and assumes the role of UW's chief executive officer in the absence of the chancellor. Farrell is in charge of the university's vice chancellors that oversee all programs and he even has authority over the Offices of Dean of Students.
Farrell replaced Peter Spear who retired in October, 2005 and Virginia Sapiro, who served as the interim Provost but was not a finalist in the provost search.
Farrell has been with the university since 1982, originally serving on the mechanical engineering faculty. He also served as an associate dean for the College of Engineering from 2001 until his appointment as the provost.
