Spencer Black (b. May 25, 1950) is a Democrat who represented Madison in the Wisconsin State Assembly from 1984 until 2010 when he announced he would not seek reelection. He was replaced by Brett Hulsey.
Political Positions
Black, like most Madison politicians, is considered to be a liberal. He is a strong supporter of enviromental-friendly legislation, increased finanical aid for students, affordable health care and lowering the drinking age. Though he is a Democrat, his views have differed from Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle's on issues like tuition hikes, state tourism and gubenitorial power.
2002 Resignation
On November 7, 2002, Black stepped down from Assembly Minority Leader after serving in that posistion for 18 months. Citing his "reluctance" to accept the job in the first place, Black said he wanted to spend more time writing legislation and less time working on his co-legislators' campaigns.
